Books on Screen: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I love Harry Potter! I’ve read each of the books at least twice, but Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is probably my favorite. The other books answer the Who, What and How but HBP tells us Why. I believe it is the most important of the seven books, and, after an extra eight-month vampire-imposed delay, it is finally on the big screen, and we were there at midnight to see it first!
There are lots of things to love about this movie. It is easily the most humorous of the series. There was so much laughter in our theatre that we missed the next line several times. It is also, in my opinion, the best directed. David Yates, who also directed Order of the Phoenix, has found his groove, and he seamlessly connects large sweeping scenes to small intimate ones. I loved his framing and the just-barely-missing-one-another moments with Harry and Draco Malfoy. Speaking of Malfoy, Tom Felton is absolutely perfect in this film. Over that past nine years we’ve watched him grow from that sneaky little blonde bully into a tall, handsome, troubled young man. The task Voldemort has given him weighs heavily on him throughout the movie resulting in much more face time than in the previous two films. We also get to see the “bad blood” between Harry and Malfoy come to its climax thanks to the Half Blood Prince.
There are other wonderful performances by the actors we have come to love. Rupert Grint is at his humorous best as Ron and Bonnie Wright finally joins the inner circle as his sister, Ginny. I will admit that I have always felt that Richard Harris was the quintessential Dumbledore and that Michael Gambon has never quite been able to fill his shoes very well, but this was by far his best performance. He has become the sage, the aging leader, and even performs a Charleton Heston-esque parting of the “red sea.”
This is the portion of the HP saga where relationships, good and bad, are in the spotlight. I would go so far as to say that relationships are this movie. There are wonderful scenes of the joys and the heartbreaks of young love that contrast vividly with the complete lack of any relationship in the life Lord Voldemort. Several times throughout the series, Harry has been reminded that it is his ability to love that makes him different than Voldemort, a difference that brings life its joy, and sadly its pain…as Harry rediscovers when he loses yet another important person in his life.
Die-hard Harry Potter fans will be frustrated by much of what was left out of this film. I found it ironic that even the namesake, the Half-Blood Prince, gets little more than a passing nod. I was most disappointed that so much of Tom Riddle’s story, the information that makes Voldemort more than just an evil two-dimensional villain, are missing. I did feel that much of this movie, while fun, was more of a set up for the final two installments than a great stand-alone story.
I was somewhat surprised when I first heard that HBP received a PG rating, but, other than a couple of rather scary scenes, most parents of elementary kids and above can feel good about seeing this one together. After all is said and done, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will make you laugh, make you cry and leave you counting down until November 2010 for the next installment of this blockbuster series.

You know, I felt the book was little more than a set up for the final one and not the stand alone story the others in the series had been. Sounds like that translates to the movie version.

Thanks for the review. The general feeling is that movies never do justice to the books but J.K.R. seems to have captured the book's magic on screen.
Martha C @ 8:46 am
My daughter saw HBP at midnight too and she loved it! We can't wait to see it this weekend. I loved the book too and can't wait to see the last movie. I have read each book at least four times and am reading them out loud to my boys and we actually finished HBP before it came out. Our whole family would love to have the book about the kids!
Dawn @ 9:10 am
I've personally resisted watching the movies because I just LOVE the books so much, and I don't do too well with the inevitable changes that come when books go to the screen. I also have an easily impressed upon mind, and I fear that the movie images will completely replace the unique images that have been created in my head when I read the books… who knows, maybe one day I'll watch all the movies back to back, but then I'll have to go back and read the books again to replace the movie images.
Man, I sound crazy here!
Deanna @ 9:39 am
Thanks for posting this review. I was wondering if I wanted to see this movie because my book memory feels that the books became darker and darker as the series went on. I can read dark stuff but not watch. Your review put me at ease.
I will take my girls…next week.
This coming fall, I am plan on starting my own challenge to read through the Harry Potter Series as I have not read all the books (skipped the first three).
Rebecca @ 10:08 am
You talked me into it! I've read all the books (at least twice), but have been less fanatical about the movies. I think it's time to do some catching up! This sounds like a cool prize, I would love to seem some of the behind-the-scenes story.

Karen P @ 9:58 pm
I always look at books and movies as two totally different things. That way I won't be as disappointed when the movie can't compare to the book. I try to enjoy the movie as a separate entity.

Oh my. My whole family is totally addicted to all things Harry Potter. Haven't gotten to this movie yet but will be shortly.
gerda @ 7:22 am
This movie did a bad job compared to the book. Lately all of them have. They take away some crucial information and add in things that weren't there. Chris Columbus or Alfonso Cauron should come back. They did the best with these movies. David Yates keeps messing these up.
However, I will still go to every midnight showing and I will still buy every dvd and I will still watch them in theatres the same number of times as the year it is.
The actors – I feel so attached to them. They will forever be my image whenever I reread the series for the fiftieth time. Plus, I have a thing for Rupert
Marianna @ 12:23 pm

Happy Summer!
Eric B @ 6:28 pm
I also agree that this movie was more of a set-up for the last two installments than a stand-alone story.
I was disapointed with the lack of "The Order" (Tonks, Lupin, etc.) in the movie compared to the book, especially with the massive fight that follows the climax in the tower, and rescuing Harry in the train…which was replaced by Luna in the film.
Although a significant part of the book, too much of the film focused on the growing love and hormones of the kids and neglected some of the politics (ministers) and growing danger.
I did still enjoy watching HP6 a lot and thought it was wonderfully directed shot for shot and acted; but I favor HP5 as a better movie overall and better paced.
Angela Palmer @ 6:49 pm
While my children (and my Dad) have read the books, I have not. I had a feeling with 6 and with 5 as well, that a lot was being glossed over. I guess I will have to read them now just to catch up.
Marcia S @ 6:56 pm

As much as anything, I think this whole series has been "magical" in the way that it has triggered an avalanche of print-on-paper reading, across a whole generation of the otherwise electronic-age spell-bound. Bravo, J.K. Rowling!
