What's on Your Nightstand — August

This month "Dinner with Dad" is on my nightstand (if I had one!). It's a great, nonfiction book about a dad committing to dinner with the family for 5 nights a week and committing to cook 2 1/2 of those nights.

Between the Olympics and the political conventions, I am not getting NEARLY as much reading time after the kids go to bed as I would like. Hopefully, by next month, I'll be back on schedule.

Fun meme! I have a stack of books on my nightstand. I haven't been tackling books as quickly as before, but am making my way through the pile.

Wow, the month went fast, and some of my books from last month haven't been read yet! Ooopsie! A few naughty books grabbed me and derailed my reading schedule. I'm sure you can sympathize!

I just finished reading Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible. I feel like a late bloomer. So many people have recommended it to me over the years, but for whatever reason I just now got around to reading it. Apart from the fact that Kingsolver is simply an amazing author, this book is just dynamite.

I love how she organized the books by chapters dedicated to each child or parent. Her ability to switch tones and personalities within and between chapters is astounding. But, the thing I liked the most was the subject matter. I have lived in third-world countries and have experienced the some of what she expresses–either in my own actions or by observing the actions of others.

Most poignant to me was reading this at night while on vacation in D.C. and touring the sites by day. The stark contrast between the freedom we enjoy in the US and our over abundance and the Congo's scarce resources shows that there is beauty in all walks of life and you really do have to stand in someone's shoes to understand their perspective.

Oh! I could go on and on. So now, the question is: What is on my bookshelf or nightstand? All the rest of Kingsolver's books. The day after putting down this book, I ran over to B&N and purchased her entire library of books and am now starting into The Bean Trees. I am sooooo excited.

My first carnival and I am a day late!

I enjoy visiting everyone else's nightstands for ideas.

I'm a first timer here and love it! I love reading what everyone has next to them to read!

My nightstand is lacking compared to last month, but I am getting more organized. Much of that has to do with this monthly event. Thank you for hosting it. My list is here.

I'm joining in a few days late… Hope that's okay! Thank you for hosting this. It's fun to take stock of the last month.

OK… I just want to let everyone know that I really did mean to start reading The Bean Trees by Kingsolver. So, in my attempt, I take the kids and my book to McDonald's. They can play while I read. Win-Win! Then another 2 stragglers jump in on the fun and soon, I am up to my eyeballs in kids. By the time I get the kids fed and discard all of the trash into the bin, I realize that along with the empty kid's meal boxes and ketchup-stained napkins, went my book. I truly thought about reaching in and trying to grab it. But ewwwwwww! So, I am off to B&N to deepen their pockets with my money. See! I should strengthen my resolve to avoid fast-food restaurants :).

A couple of day late, but I did get my post up! Looking forward to reading everybody's recommendations.
