Bond Girl, based on Erin Duffy’s real life at a financial company on Wall Street, has been described as The Devil Wears Prada meets Wall Street, but I think this description does the book a disservice.
Just out of college, Alex is hired at Cromwell Pierce to work on the bond trading floor. The daughter of a Wall Street banker, Alex finds working on the Street is not at all what she expected. In between fetching dozens of boxes of pizza and large orders of coffee from Starbucks, usually while wearing footwear inappropriate for such tasks, she moves her folding chair around the desk, watching over shoulders to learn the job. As she learns the ropes and proves her abilities, she earns the respect of her colleagues and her boss and finally earns her own spot on the desk. Alex also breaks one of her boss’s biggest rules and becomes involved with a cute coworker, but also has to fend off the advances of an important client who won’t take no for an answer.
While Alex — nicknamed Girlie — spends a good portion of her first year as a gopher, and mistakes are punished in unusual methods, such as fetching a 50 lb. wheel of cheese, the similarity to Prada ends there. Her coworkers play some crazy pranks on each other and engage in some questionable behavior, but they’re mostly good people and encourage her. When the economy tanks and Cromwell’s employees are hit hard, Alex has to decide what she really wants to do with her life.
Bond Girl is a fun read, and while the financial jargon in the beginning was difficult to follow, you can’t help but cheer Alex on as she navigates the world of Wall Street.
