Liberty Porter: First Daughter

LibertyPorterLiberty is a nine-year-old girl whose father has just been elected President (is it a coincidence that he bears a strong resemblance to Barack Obama and she looks like one of his cute daughters??). Liberty Porter, First Daughter basically covers Inauguration Day. The day starts in the Limo where her soon-to-be President dad sits on the card she made him, which is an issue because glittery smiley face on it is still a little wet.

See — being First Daughter isn’t so different from being any other nine-year-old girl.

After the ceremony, we follow Liberty as she gets acquainted with the White House, including seeing her cool new room, tasting in the chocolate shop, and meeting some of the White House employees — ones she likes such as her secret agent, and others of whom she is not so fond like the bossy Miss Crum.

Throughout the book she shares fun facts about the White House and other First Kids (which she learned when she wrote her A+ report “What happened in the White House before the Porters took over”).

This book was a lot of fun and the end of each chapter left me wanting to read “just one more.” My 11-year-old daughter Amanda and I both read this book. She read it first and told me that it was “pretty good.” When I read it, I told her that I REALLY liked it, and she agreed, clarifying that she would have really loved it if she was 8. I agree with her on that. I think that this would be a great book for younger tweens, or perhaps older tweens who don’t go for the thick tomes that Amanda likes.

For more books like this, Aladdin M!x is a fun site that Simon and Schuster has put together for kids who “are too old for kids’ books” but whose moms would “freak out if you come home with anything scandalous.”

Even though our big Gift Guide and Giveaway is all wrapped up, we aren’t giving up on giveaways. Leave a comment here to enter one of five copies of Liberty Porter, First Daughter. We won’t be hosting a giveaway on December 23, so we’ll leave this open for two weeks, announcing the winners on December 30.
