At the risk of sounding incredibly obvious, could you be talking about the Great Illustrated Classics series (seen HERE). I do know what you mean about a book fitting in your hand. When I went to the library to get Jane Eyre, one copy was a smallish hardback. Because it was so small, it was thick. I knew that wouldn't be comfortable to read, so I found a nice normal paperback.
