The perfect description of this wonderful book! After I finished it I began Cry, the Beloved Country, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loved Tree. My book club read it a while back and it got mixed results though. My mom grew up in Brooklyn and for me, it was reminiscent of her life (although she wasn't really poor).
