I really have enjoyed Lynn Austin and this one happened to be the first book I ever read from her. I felt like I could relate quite well to the protagonist because in my late teens I was the same way-easily swayed by the opinions around me. I enjoyed Victoria's journey for independent thinking and think that it speaks well to young women searching for their own ideas. Thanks for this helpful website!

Ooooh, I loved (loved!) the Refiner's Fire series. I also really liked "Hidden Places." I have "A Woman's Place" and tried to start it several times, but didn't find it as engaging as these other titles of hers. Now I'm thinking maybe I didn't give it a chance...

I liked A Woman's Place and A Proper Pursuit, but I think Austin's best works are her Refiner's Fire series (Civil War) and her Chronicles of the Kings series.

In the Chronicles of the Kings series, the novels are set in the time of the Old Testament kings. Not only were the novels very well written, but they also helped me to weave the timelines of the kings and the prophets together in my mind. It was nice to get lost in books that also made me want to pick up my Bible to compare the two. I highly recommend them!

I don't know if I told you, but the whole reason I wanted to review this book was based on your review of A Woman's Place. It sounded great, and I thought I'd like it, but as you know, I never had time to get to it.

The first book I read by Austin was Candle In the Darkness. Loved it immensely! It's a novel set in the Civil War, and she grabs you from the very first page. I do like the way she takes you to another time and makes you feel like you are there. I also read the second book (Refiner's Fire?) in that series and was equally pleased.

I have read a couple of her other books and not been as impressed, but I'm more of a fan of historical fiction than contemporary fiction.

I've got A Proper Pursuit on my list to read. Thanks for the review.
