This sounds fascinating! I've never been one that needs a full 8 hours of sleep, so I can heartily agree on that point. Will be adding this to my list!

Thank you Carrie for such an honest book review. It does sound interesting... I know that I have always benefited from more than 8 hours of sleep and that my creativity does not often flourish within the confines of a rigid 9-5 schedule.

Mark, thank you for your comment and the link to Medina's lectures. I still very much disagree with Medina's presupposition that we evolved into our present state. I hold to the literal interpretation of Genesis 1 in which God declared HE made the world in 6 days. So while I am delighted to hear that Medina is a Christian, I do not agree with his scientific outlook. That being said, I do agree with you (very much!) that science and faith DO go hand in hand. I believe if you look at the evidence, science will and does support a Creationist Worldview.

Medina has wonderful insights into the human brain and much to offer and share with people. I'm glad he wrote this book and I think it's worthy of anyone's read and thought. I do want to point out to people though that I disagree with his reliance on Darwin's teachings, introduced to the world in 1859, which took strong root in the 1930's (or thereabouts). I would rather believe that God had the ability to do what He said He did - in the time frame He gave.

As I mentioned, I think Medina has done a great job explaining how the human brain works and any thinking Christian (or otherwise!) would WANT to know more about this very subject as it effects each one of us on a minute-by-minute basis. Stunning insights and clarity of thought. But my disclaimer still remains.

****
Iva - I keep asking myself the same question.

Do you ever find yourself wondering if some subject matter is okay for Christians to delve into? The reason I ask is because while you promote the book to an extent, you clearly disagree with the author on some of his historical conclusions. Can we take some and leave some?

Really, I'm just thinking out loud. Thank you so much for the book review. I enjoy them all.

This is a well written review. I thought you might like to know Dr. Medina is a Bible believing Christian. He gives lectures on faith and science. http://www.upc.org/worship.aspx?id=1196#mind

Science and faith are compatible. I recommend checking out "The Language of God" by Francis Collins.

Great review. This is something that my husband would enjoy reading...I think we might take your suggestion and read it as a couple!

What an interesting concept. It sounds like a very thought-provoking book. I like the idea of what the author seems to be saying about class rooms and jobs. We almost have too much structure these days. His pre-supposition about evolution seems to be a common one these days, doesn't it? Or has it always been?

This is a well-written review. Thank you!

This book sounds really interesting. Since college I have know that a 9-to-5 day doesn't really work for my profession. There are plenty of days where I'm sitting at work thinking about what to make for dinner. And frequent nights where I lay in bed thinking through a project from work.

You can't schedule creativity.
