I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Podcast

I don’t know how many of you listened to the podcast I did with Monica Bearden, RD, in conjunction with reviewing her Baby Fat Diet book. When I announced the post here I also asked if you’d want to hear podcasts here on 5 Minutes for Books, and if so, on what topics. I didn’t get much response, so I decided we’d record a few and see how it goes.

Our first was an attempt to have a discussion about our February selection of the Classics Bookclub.

We discussed memoir in general and a few of our thoughts about this one in particular. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was a difficult read, and perhaps in hindsight having three white girls discuss the memoir of an African American woman from the rural south in the 1930′s was a bad idea. Race is a tough topic to address sensitively and honestly, but I hope that we achieved that.

Once we get our feed approved, you will be able to subscribe in itunes, but for now you can listen here or download it to your computer to listen to at your convenience (you can even download to itunes now, by selecting “other program”).

I tried to edit it down unsuccessfully so it’s pretty long. I guess I’d love your thoughts on ideal length. As a frequent podcast listener, to me 20 – 40 minutes is great, but if you are listening on site, you might get distracted or bored after 10. I would say that the first 20 minutes is good and it gets a little rambly and repetitive after that.

So please come and “meet” Melissa, Lauren and me, and let us know what you think — about our specific discussion, about how dorky I sound and how articulate Melissa and Lauren sound, or about podcasts you’d like to hear in the future.
