Chicken Big

At 5 Minutes for Books, we are proud to feature books across many genres for children and adults. This week is all about highlighting children’s books, but if you are a fan of Audiobooks as I am, peruse some of the reviews in the archives.

Read the anchor post to find all of the Fall Festival of Children’s Books reviews and see how you can get involved as well.

On a teeny little farm, in an itty-bitty coop, a very small hen laid a big, giant egg. And out of this egg came one big, humongous . . . something. “It’s big!” clucked the little rooster. “It’s enormous!” clucked the small chicken. “It’s an elephant!” peeped the smallest chicken. “Run for your lives!” they cried. No matter how they try, these clueless chickens can’t make sense of the gigantic new member of their family—until he saves the day.

Chicken Big by Keith Graves is a hilarious twist on the classic Chicken Little tale.  Each time the smallest chicken comes up with another explanation to explain the giant chicken, Chicken Big shows why he’s not a squirrel, an umbrella or a sweater.  He also has a droll sense of humor, thinking “these are not bright chickens.”

The illustrations are fun but simple, and the chickens are surprisingly expressive, considering they’re chickens.  The story is told in a prose that sometimes rhymes, sometimes not.  And of course there’s a moral, that you shouldn’t jump to conclusions without knowing all of the information, though Chicken Big takes it all in stride and shows his fellow chickens why he’s not what they think he is.

Chicken Big is rated for ages 4-8 and as always my 7 year old appreciated the humor of the story, while the 3 year old thought the drawings were hilarious.  He doesn’t quite get the misunderstandings, since it’s obvious to him that Chicken Big isn’t an elephant, but he enjoyed it nonetheless.

I haven’t read any of the other books by Keith Graves but after seeing how much my boys loved Chicken Big I’m looking forward seeing what else he has to offer.

Chronicle Books is offering one copy of Keith Graves’ Chicken Big to one lucky 5 Minutes for Books reader. Simply leave a comment here to be entered, (U.S. and Canada residents only), and we’ll announce the winner on October 2. This giveaway is closed.
