Welcome to Monster Isle

If you are ever looking for some books that are a little out of the ordinary, you might want to take a peek at Immedium publishers. Oh trust me. You'll begin to know them when you see them because of their cartoon-like illustrations. Recently they sent me a few of their titles to check out and I really think that they are so original that I wanted to pass along a couple of the titles to you, so at the very least you can be informed about them. Starting with Welcome to Monster Isle we find a family of tourist who are marooned on an unknown island. Turns out it's Monster Island and I think it's safe to say that the family members are a little ...

It Starts at Home

It Starts at Home: A Practical Guide to Nurturing Lifelong Faith is exactly what it suggests it is - practical encouragement for living out your Christian faith within the four walls of your home. My husband, Jonathan, beat me to reading this book and so we both ended up giving this one a read. This book makes the point that simply sending your children to Sunday School without living out faith at home is not going to produce a committed Christian for life (should that be your intent.) Authors Kurt Bruner and Steve Stroope are here to remind parents/guardians that it is what children see lived out at home that will most effectively impact them during their life walk. With that in mind, the authors address Christian parents ...

Early Readers

If you have a reluctant reader of any sort, or have a reader who finds most beginning reading books a bit boring, check out Carson Dellosa's line of readers. I have been familiar with Carson Dellosa books for some time. They are most easily found at (any) school supply store, however, their books are also available on their website and on Amazon. They have a wide range of educational products to promote and encourage reading in even the youngest of children. Jennifer and I explored their booth at a bit at the Book Expo this past May and I got caught up on some of their newer product lines. I was very interested to see that they have a series of readers all about animals ...

Read and Sing Along Books

At the Book Expo I came across the Twin Sisters booth. I was familiar with their offerings but it had been several years since I had checked in with them. As far as I knew - they dealt mostly with music CD's and not books. Apparently I'm a bit behind the times because they are doing both books and music! I was delighted to see that they had cleverly combined the two and had created some delightful Read & Sing Along books for babies and toddlers! Twin Sisters kindly sent me some samples of books in this particular series and my boys and I have had a lot of fun checking them out! This series of books highlight songs that you are all probably very familiar with. The title of each book indicates the main track ...

Accidental Cowgirl

We were asked if 5 Minutes for Books would like to participate in a book tour, sponsored by Women on Writing (WOW), for the book Accidental Cowgirl: Six Cows, No Horse and No Clue. I waved my hand around in the air to be the reviewer on staff who got to read this one because I thought it sounded fascinating. Mary Lynn Archibald writes this memoir to tell other potential cowpoke what life on a ranch is really like. She and her husband Carl had visions of grandeur in their heads as they signed papers on Twin Creeks Ranch. They envisioned themselves hiking, rocking in rocking chairs on the front porch of their ranch style home, lovely wildflowers and calm breezes. What they didn't bargain for were ...

I really wanted to find the biggest picture that I could of the Nintendo DSiXL 100 Classic Books game to give you the best idea of what it would look like. Hopefully this particular picture gives you some idea of the reading experience you can expect to have, courtesy of a Nintendo DSi XL screen! Now the lovely ladies here at 5 Minutes for Books were each given an opportunity to read from this 100 Classic Books game on the new Nintendo DSi XL. As any of you who know me through my book reviews, you know that I like reading with an actual book on my hand. Reading a book on a game console is ...

Teddy Bear Sing-Along Books

When I saw the Teddy Bear Sing-Along titles were to be released by Silver Dolphin Books, I knew I wanted to check them out for Bookworm2 (age 15 months), my little kinesthetic learner. Give a book sounds and touchy-feely fluff and he is all over the book. I figured the cuteness of the teddy bears and familiarity of songs like "Old MacDonald" and "The Wheels on the Bus" would be fun for mommy to interact with him a bit. I was not wrong. Bookworm2 absolutely adores both Old MacDonald Had a Farm and The Wheels on the Bus, both by David Ellwand Both of these books contain photographs of stuffed teddy bears interacting within a scene ...
