Mailbox Monday — August 30

Oh how much we book bloggers love those men and women in blue, those in brown, and those who drive those big white trucks with the green and purple logo. This is what we found in our mailboxes this week. Click over to Chick Loves Lit to see what other bloggers have bought or received or been surprised by this week. While you're here we invite you to check out our current giveaways, subscribe to our feed, and/or follow us @5M4B on Twitter. JENNIFER Every single book that I received this week was unsolicited and for review (except Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games), which I preordered like every other book blogger in the world). Speaking of Mockingjay, if you are a fan (or a fan of a free Ipod Touch), but sure ...

Amish Proverbs

I have read many Amish fiction books, and I enjoy escaping to a place where life seems calmer, more family-centered, and people are honest and hard-working. In April, my husband and I visited Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and spent the day touring and learning more about the Amish lifestyle. Although I know I would never be able to adhere to the Amish way of life, I do believe that all of us would benefit from incorporating some of their attitudes into our busy schedules. In her new gift book, Amish Proverbs: Words of Wisdom from the Simple Life, Suzanne Woods Fisher provides a collection of wise Amish sayings that all of us can heed and treasure. Suzanne Woods Fisher's interest in the Amish community stems from her own family heritage. Her ...

Diamond Ruby

Although historical fiction is my favorite genre, I haven't read much of it lately. Really, I haven't read much fiction at all this summer (not very convenient when you are a regular contributor for a book blog). We've been busy, but I've also been reading a lot more nonfiction titles because of health issues (I do have some great titles related to nutrition to review). A few weeks ago, I was craving a good story. I picked up Diamond Ruby, and I am so glad I did. This debut novel from nonfiction writer Joseph Wallace is a fantastic read, and I highly recommend it. Diamond Ruby is based on the true story of Jackie Mitchell, a young woman ...

LMNO Peas

As a former elementary school teacher and a parent, I've seen lots of alphabet books. As we all know, alphabet books are a fun way to introduce the alphabet and encourage young children to interact with books. In his new book, LMNO Peas, author Keith Baker presents the alphabet in such a fun way that it is sure to delight the preschool crowd. As the title suggests, this book is about peas, and it is dedicated to "pea-ple everywhere--young and old, large and small, green and round." The adorable little peas "work and play in the ABCs." Each letter of the alphabet includes peas in different roles, like acrobats, artists, and astronauts or kickers, kayakers, and kings. The sing-song text makes a perfect read-aloud, and the whimsical, bright illustrations ...

Not All Princesses Dress in Pink

My daughter is all girl when it comes to wearing dresses and colors like pink and purple. Not long ago, my dad asked, "Why do you make her wear dresses all the time?" I laughed and explained, "I don't make her. If I get anything else out of the closet, she complains and begs for a dress. That's all she wants to wear." Of course, even with a dress on, my princess can hang with the boys. My son plays baseball, and as you can imagine, he is covered with dirt and grass stains at the end of a game. Unfortunately, he is never the dirtiest person in the car on the ride home from the field. That honor goes to my daughter, dress and all! She likes to feel pretty, but she sure likes ...

Mailbox Monday — July 12

Each week, The Printed Page invites booklovers to share what books arrived in their mailbox on on their front porch, be they review copies, gifts, purchased or what. JENNIFER I was gone for over two weeks, and THIS is what awaited me when I returned: I'm not going to go into detail about each book, but I have a few thoughts on some of them: I was so excited about Room: A Novel that I started reading it the day after I got it and finished it within two days. It's excellent. Both Amanda (my 11-year-old daughter) and I are looking forward to reading I, Q: The White House, after enjoying the first in the ...

On Reading: When Real Life and Books Come Together

As everyone knows, books can take you places. Whether you want to visit a different time or location, or whether you want to read about real events or experience a world of fantasy, all you have to do is open the cover of a book. Recently, our family has been able to connect real-life experiences with our books, and that has been a wonderful treat! Last year, my daughter went through an Alice phase (as in Alice from Wonderland). She was Alice for Halloween, she watched the Disney movie many times, and she even got to have tea with Alice when we visited Disney World in December. Although I should have used those experiences as a reason to read the actual story by Lewis Carroll, I didn't...until recently. At the beginning of June, a Nintendo DSi XL
