This Little Prayer of Mine

I love listening to the prayers of children—how innocent and precious they are! As a parent, I hope to teach my children that their prayers are important and that taking time to talk with God is an essential part of life. Of course, children learn by example, and I try to model a life of prayer, but I also appreciate good books that can help my children to understand the importance of a faithful walk with God. In his new book, This Little Prayer of Mine, Anthony DeStefano uses engaging rhymes to teach children that their prayers are important to God. He also discusses good times to pray: when we are fearful, when we are sad, when we need to make a decision, when we want to ...

Abigail

In the Bible, the story of Abigail is found in 1 Samuel. After the death of her very foolish husband Nabal, Abigail becomes one of King David's wives. Author Jill Eileen Smith explores the lives of the wives of King David in her new series, and Abigail is the focus of her second book (the first book was Michal). Abigail begins with Abigail in her youth, as she prepares to marry Nabal, and continues through her life until she is one of the wives of King David living in the palace (Abigail married David before he became king). The book is fascinating as a historical novel, but because this is a story from the ...

Though Waters Roar

I just let the book fall shut after completing Though Waters Roar, which is the latest book by Christian author, Lynn Austin. I read Austin's A Woman's Place (click on the link to read my review) which I really rather loved, despite the fact that I think Austin overplayed the "women are equal to men" card. I followed that one up by reading A Proper Pursuit which I reviewed here at 5 Minutes for Books and, after reading that book, did a little exploring online and discovered that the author had a very special relationship with her mother and grandmother and seemed to really be interested in the changes that women have undergone over time, culturally speaking. I was growing a little weary, but still liked ...

Double Trouble

Last May, I reviewed Susan May Warren's Nothing But Trouble. In this story, PJ Sugar returns to her hometown after a ten year absence and finds herself in the middle of a big mess. At the conclusion of that story, PJ resolves to remain home and put the pieces of her life back together. In Double Trouble, Susan May Warren continues PJ's story. PJ is working toward a career in private investigating, and she finds herself at the center of a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Boone, PJ's high-school sweetheart, hopes to have her as his bride-to-be. Although PJ loves Boone, she is hesitant to answer yes because she is not sure she is the same girl he fell in love with, and she ...

This Momentary Marriage

Staying Married is Not About Staying in Love is the title of Chapter One in John Piper's This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence. Very different from the world has to say on the subject of marriage, isn't it? In fact, the entire book is very contrary to society's take on the bonds of matrimony. To the world, they are bonds easily broken without a second thought. To which Piper responds, "Staying married, therefore, is not mainly about staying in love. It is about keeping covenant" (p. 25). I found this book so informative that it's a new 5 Star Read. If you'd like to win one of THREE copies (U.S. residents) please read my full review of This Momentary Marriage over at 5 Minutes for Mom. The winners iwill be announced in next Monday's book review column at 5 Minutes ...

The Choice

I have read quite a few Amish fiction novels, and I have enjoyed many of them. After a while, however, I started to feel like I was reading the same story repeatedly. When I was asked to participate in the blog tour for The Choice, I hesitated. What would I say about another Amish story? I am happy to report that The Choice is not just another Amish story at all. Sure, there are characters struggling with the decision to stick with tradition or follow their hearts, but there is also suspense, involvement with Englishers, and a fast-paced story line. I can't tell you how many times I thought I had things ...

Becoming Spiritually Beautiful

Becoming Spiritually Beautiful caught my eye because it it by author Sharon Jaynes, who wrote The Power of a Woman's Words which I read last year (click on the title to see my review). I had to know what Jaynes had to say in her latest (at the time of this post) work. Becoming Spiritually Beautiful is an encouragement for you to 'put aside the things which are behind you' (i.e., the things that happened in your past) and to look forward. It is a pat on the back to Christian women to point out the fact that the things that they personally believe about themselves aren't necessarily really true - rather it is what God ...
