Classics Bookclub — How are you doing?

I meant to -- I really did. When the Classics Bookclub went to once a quarter, I set a goal of one classic per quarter. Not too hard. I was reading Gulliver's Travels on my very fun new 100 Classics Books program on my Nintendo DSiXL. I read it some on my vacation in June/July. I read some more when I got home. Then I sort of got caught up in other things. I was going to finish it up while we were away visiting family for 4 days. In fact, I got in lots of reading, finishing up a book or two. I brought the 100 Classics Books cartridge, but guess what? I forgot my DS -- that's what. ARGH! The story was okay. Not great, but okay, but as I was reading, I ...

Mailbox Monday — August 30

Oh how much we book bloggers love those men and women in blue, those in brown, and those who drive those big white trucks with the green and purple logo. This is what we found in our mailboxes this week. Click over to Chick Loves Lit to see what other bloggers have bought or received or been surprised by this week. While you're here we invite you to check out our current giveaways, subscribe to our feed, and/or follow us @5M4B on Twitter. JENNIFER Every single book that I received this week was unsolicited and for review (except Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games), which I preordered like every other book blogger in the world). Speaking of Mockingjay, if you are a fan (or a fan of a free Ipod Touch), but sure ...

What’s on Your Nightstand — August 24

What books are sitting on your nightstand -- or coffee table or in your bathroom in your e-reader or on your ipod? What books are you looking forward to reading this month when you get a nice chunk of time? Will back-to-school impact your reading for the month? I think that it will for me, but I'm not sure how. With my son starting first grade, this is the first year I'll have both kids in school full time. I also am hoping to get more work from home done, so while I envision myself reading away the hours on my back deck or front porch in the warm-but-not-hot September days, I'm not sure that's reality. That remains to be seen, but a girl can dream. I've made my list (see the linky below). Have you made yours? ...

Mailbox Monday– August 23

If it's Monday, it's must be time to head to the mailbox! We've enjoyed participating in Mailbox Monday, a fun book blog carnival begun by The Printed Page. DAWN I have a household of happy, happy children this week following several days of packages, both expected ones and wonderful surprises. Kids’ Picks — August

My kids have enjoyed reading this summer. My daughter (almost 12) has read a handful of books in the last week alone. She's a machine (oh, how I wish I could stay in bed 2 hours after I awaken and read every morning). Kyle (6) is finally sitting and reading chapters. I am over the moon!! I'll be sharing some books that they enjoyed over at my personal blog, but I wanted to give you a hearty invitation to share on your own blogs or in the comments what books your children have enjoyed over the last month (or over the summer if you've been remiss in posting). Visit our Join In page to find out all the details about all of our Tuesday community events, from Kids' Picks to What's on Your Nightstand, to a Children's Classics challenge. ...

Mailbox Monday – August 16

Mailbox Monday is a carnival that was started by Marcia at the Printed Page, where we are invited to share about books that we ordered or bought or received for review. It's such a fun way to connect with other booklovers! Chick Loves Lit, is guest-hosting Mailbox Monday all month, so be sure to check in over there. JENNIFER All copies for review (I've been on a reading roll, so I need to keep it up, so that I can stay on top of Mount TBR): The Kneebone Boy by Ellen Potter -- I've heard good things about Potter, but never read her. This middle-grade novel has a quirky feel, and quirky either makes me smile the whole time I'm reading or flops. ...

Children’s Classics Award Winners– August

Welcome back to the Children's Classics monthly post, where our focus for the rest of 2010 is on award winning books that dazzle our kids with amazing illustrations, beautifully crafted stories and meaningful messages. Last month, I focused on several of the Caldecott Medal winning picture books that we're fortunate enough to have in our personal library. This month, I turned to the John Newbery Medal, and I was thrilled to see my son's shelves filled with many of these gold-stamped books! While he's been reading some of them this summer, I tackled one specific selection on my own. Currently checked out from the library is A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park (2002 Newbery Medal winner), and although it hasn't been read yet, ...
