I really wanted to find the biggest picture that I could of the Nintendo DSiXL 100 Classic Books game to give you the best idea of what it would look like. Hopefully this particular picture gives you some idea of the reading experience you can expect to have, courtesy of a Nintendo DSi XL screen!
Now the lovely ladies here at 5 Minutes for Books were each given an opportunity to read from this 100 Classic Books game on the new Nintendo DSi XL. As any of you who know me through my book reviews, you know that I like reading with an actual book on my hand. Reading a book on a game console is ...

It's hard to imagine trying to teach a youngster how to use the library in the good old fashioned way, what with the advent of computers. The library system seem so easy to navigate nowadays! With a click of the button we can find almost anything we need to. However, it is still a good idea to teach younger children how to physically find the information that they are looking for so that they can learn and understand the world around them for themselves. Enter: Upstart Books which offer a few items to spur children on in their quest for knowledge.
Mr. Crumb's Secret is a Fribble Mouse Library Mystery. There are several books in the Fribble Mouse series, each of which involve young Fribble. Who is ...

This book arrived in my mailbox by surprise and at first I looked at it with some suspicion. After all, the cover art was kind of curious. However, once I glanced at the whole title - Books Make Me Happy: My First Reading Log - I was eager to crack open this book and find out what it was all about!
Stay with me here because this is awesome....
Want to get your kids hooked on reading this summer? Books Make Me Happy beats out any library reading program that I can think of, with all due respect to the library. Come up with your own reward at the end of this if you must - and it'll ...

It's getting close to the time when mothers and fathers everywhere are trying to locate resources and activities to have on hand for summer doldrums or as distractions during road trips. To that end, I'd like to point out a couple of things as a suggestion, both offered by Peter Pauper Press.
Brainiac's Road Trip Activity Book is a great thing to toss in the backseat of the car right before you take off on your adventure. It's recommended for ages 4-8 but I don't think my son, at 3 1/2 is remotely close to being ready to tackle some of the world puzzles in this book all by himself. If you are looking for things that the kids can do by themselves, I would say that ...

My eldest son loves to read and I want to encourage that any way I can. That said, he's really not into art or create anything on his own. When I came across Creativity for Kids: Create Your Own Books I thought that this might be the perfect blend of art and love of reading. I am happy to report that this went over very well and we have been delighted about making our own books!
In the Creativity for Kids: Create Your Own Books package you receive two blank books (which I've displayed below for you to get a better idea of what they look like.) Of course, my three year old barely likes to draw ...

I don't know about you guys, but we like reading books around here. Furthermore, it's a real treat to play games in our home (because I confess, mommy isn't much of a game player!) But to combine the two activities? Well, to suggest such is to secure the enthusiasm of a certain little 3 1/2 year old.
Read my full review of this game and one other from I Can Do That! Games at 5 Minutes for Mom. And then you can enter to win a set for yourself (U.S. residents only). The giveaway will close on April 4.

Carrie comes by her book obsession honestly, having descended from a long line of bibliophiles. She blogs about books, and how she ...

As the mom to two preschool aged children, I try to be prepared with time fillers when we get ready for situations that involve waiting- the doctor's office, restaurants, the seemingly never ending line at the post office. Little race cars and animal figures work wonders for my young 'uns, but they also are increasingly interested in drawing, which makes ALEX Toys' activity books just perfect for us.
They are currently happy to bring along their Scribble & Doodle books with us when we venture out, but they're also just as happy sitting at their play table with them as well. These spiral bound drawing books, with 50 partially printed pages in addition to 25 blank pages, come with eight triangular shaped crayons that fit on children's fingertips and are unique and inviting. I say ...
