I love my daughter, and she's lots of fun to take on outings.
Once upon a time there was a family who went to visit some old ruins. There was lots to look at,
there were many places to explore,
there were wonderful sights to see.
Her mother was very patient with her. She did not say, "Put down that book and play with your brothers." (Although you can kind of see the girl's point...)

First of all, thanks so much to Jennifer for inviting me to guest post on “On Reading.” When I was a child, our home was always filled with great books. My parents are both classicists and teachers, so the ...

As everyone knows, books can take you places. Whether you want to visit a different time or location, or whether you want to read about real events or experience a world of fantasy, all you have to do is open the cover of a book. Recently, our family has been able to connect real-life experiences with our books, and that has been a wonderful treat!
Last year, my daughter went through an Alice phase (as in Alice from Wonderland). She was Alice for Halloween, she watched the Disney movie many times, and she even got to have tea with Alice when we visited Disney World in December. Although I should have used those experiences as a reason to read the actual story by Lewis Carroll, I didn't...until recently. At the beginning of June, a Nintendo DSi XL

My nine year old son and I have a long history of reading together, from our days of enjoying the perfectly suited Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus while riding the shuttle bus to preschool each morning years ago, to our more recent experiences reading novels together, bit by bit each night. While he and I both seem inclined to primarily choose contemporary novels, with settings and characters similar to ourselves, we're branching out right now in an attempt to broaden both of our reading horizons. We're going "classic."
I made a commitment to read four classic works for this year's Classics Bookclub, and so far I've logged in two planned titles and two extras, so woo-hoo! But with my son, I'm taking advantage of the new software offered for the Nintendo DS system, 100 ...

One of my friends emailed me recently, asking how I find time to do it. How do I find time to read? It's a fair question. I work full time outside the house. I have 2 young kids (3.5 and going on 7). My oldest is active with sports and Scouts and I'm on the PTO. I have a house to take care of. And yet I read a pretty good amount of books - an average of 6 a month. Which to some, especially book bloggers, may not seem like a lot, but I think it's pretty good.
So how do I find time to read? I guess my love of reading means I make the time. When I get to work in the morning and turn my laptop on, I pull out my book. It takes a ...

After thoroughly enjoying my month of non-fiction self-challenge back in April, I had been toying with the idea of doing a month of e-reading. Several factors came into play when considered to do it this month:
The Why:
As a fan of the "project memoir" this type of challenge appeals to me. I found that it increased my focus on the books I selected -- before, during and after the challenge period -- when I set out to read only nonfiction in April. There's been a similar effect this time, even if it's for a different reason.
We are going to be doing some traveling later this month, and there's nothing more appealing than just grabbing my Kindle and going!
I found out that June is National Audiobook month, so what better way to indulge my love of the audiobook than to commit to listening more?
And ...
