This is the giveaway that I've been most excited to present. I hope that some of you will take my suggestion to heart and make that tween/early teen girl on your list very happy with The Mother-Daughter Bookclub series by Heather Vogel Frederick.
Each book features this group of diverse can-do girls as they read, discuss, and experience a classic novel, which dovetails nicely with the regular tween drama in their own lives.
The Mother Daughter Bookclub -- (read mine and Amanda's thoughts HERE) -- introduces us to the girls and their moms. One reason that I like this series so much is that the mothers and the daughters are both fully characterized. Obviously reading literature featuring tweens can help you understand your own tween, but I think it can work in reverse too. There aren't many books that feature ...

David Carter's Bugs series started with How Many Bugs in a Box?. Since that time, he has written more than 50 pop-up books. The latest Bug book is titled Snow Bugs: A Wintery Pop-up Book , and it is a wonderful addition to the series. The Snowflake Bugs, Ice-Skating Bugs, and other wintry creatures are celebrating the cold weather in a way that will make young readers smile. Each spread includes whimsical text and pop-ups for children to enjoy.
This book would make a great gift for children ages 3 and up, but I would recommend adult supervision for kids under 5. The pop-ups are sturdy, but some are intricately designed and could be messed up ...

Each month my post on the first two books in The Immortals series by Alyson Noel (Evermore and Blue Moon) receives a noticeable number of hits, and occasionally a comment from a teen fan, which tells me that these books are hot.
The Immortals series consists of Evermore, Blue Moon, and the recently-released Shadowland (which brings us to the mid-point in the six-book series). These books follow the trend of the paranormal. Though I know that some younger kids try to jump on the bandwagon with some Young Adult offerings, I think that these books are definitely for teens. While there's nothing overly explicit, there are many mature themes presented including drinking, physical relationships, not to mention some dark magic.
I've been taking in the series on audiobook. The excellent narration from Katie Schorr adds to the experience.
I don't ...

When holiday shopping for kids, there's always the factor of finding something unique, and the nine to twelve year old set can often pose a challenge, but it's always safe to check out the latest offerings from the kooky folks at Klutz. (And I say kooky with all due respect!) With a wide variety of activity books in their gift center, it's difficult to not find something just right. As the mom of a nine year old boy, I have to say that two specific offerings stand out. Bonnie Burton brings us Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars- the must-have drawing guide for any true Star Wars fan, and Pat Murphy, along with the Scientists of Klutz Labs, presents Invasion of the Bristlesbots, with which kids can transform two toothbrush heads into robots.
Now, the very ...

We all know the traditional song that lays out the assortment of gifts given in the days preceding Christmas, so the structure of this new picture book should be familiar. In The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia, readers are introduced to twelve 'gifts' specific to the state of Virginia, from a cardinal in a dogwood tree (state bird and state tree, of course) to five pewter mugs (from the fabulous Colonial Williamsburg).
The book is set up as a series of letters sent from William, who is in Virginia visiting family, to his sister Eleanor, whose recently broken leg prevents her from traveling with him. With each new part of the state that he visits, he sends his letter and explains his "gift" as he shares information and fun facts. For my own children, this book ...

I am really excited about this particular giveaway because it includes some books that I have really enjoyed over the course of this past year. These are books I would recommend with little to no hesitation as being good reads and are definitely on my "gift buying" list this year. They aren't necessarily just for men, but would definitely appeal to those who enjoy a bit more action and adventure in their reading.
First of all, there's Coop: A Year of Poultry, Pigs, and Parenting. You can read my review of Coop and see that I could not find enough nice things to say about the book. I still can't. This book is perfect for people. (That's not an incomplete sentence by the way.) If you are a person and you ...
